American Industrial Revolution (1870-1920)

The American Industrial Revolution (1870-1920) changed the United States citizens from an agricultural people to one that was highly industrialized. They began to performed much of their work in factories and on machines. This transition took fifty years and caused a dramatic change in the nation's economic history.

Many changes came about during the American Industrial Revolution (1870-1920). In 1870, the United States' population was approximately 36 million people. 70 percent of the population were farmers. In 1900, the population of the United States had been estimated at over 80 million people.

This was partly due to the better life people were living because of the technological and medical breakthroughs of this era. Also, a big wave of immigrants came to the United States during this time. Between the 1880*s and 1920, a large group of people from the Jewish faith migrated from Russia and settled in the lower east side of New York City. Between 1880 and 1914, there was a big influx of people from Italy to the United States(about 3.6 million people came from Italy}. From the 1840's to 1900, it was estimated that 3.5 million Irish people migrated the United States.

The Americans were also becoming more educated during

It was at this time Carnegie decided to specialized in the iron business. He took full advantage of Bessemer's (1813-1898) invention of the open-hearth blast furnace. He was very successful in the steel business because he brought the cost of steel from $55 a ton down to $11 a ton. His steel was also considered of the finest quality.

Another industry to grow immensely was the oil industry. John D. Rockefeller was the big name in oil. He started the Standard Oil Company of Cleveland,, Ohio in 1870 at the age of 31. Rockefeller was born in upstate New York. He settled in Cleveland in 1855 and became a produce merchant. During the Civil War he invested in a local refinery and by 1865 was engaged full time in the oil business. By 1879, he controlled 90 percent of the nation's oil pipelines and large reserves of petroleum in the ground. He reduced the cost of burning oil for lighting to 1 cent a day. By 1892, John D. Rockefeller was worth over $800 million.

The growth of businesses and creation of new jobs also created some problems. In 1877 the Pittsburg Railroad Strike occured. To end the strike, railroad executives put extra mail cars on the trains to get the National Guard to come in and break the strike. This worked because it is a federal offense to stop the mail from being delivered.

The Americans were also trading and investing a lot more. In 1870, the United States' export trade was at $270 million. Thirty years later, in 1900S the United States* export trade was estimated at $850 million. In 1890, there were approximately twenty five trusts in the Unites States, with about $120 million invested. In 1901, there were approximately three hundred trus
