Sex appeal in advertisings negative effects on children

Sex appeal in advertising has become an incredibly controversial issue due to its negative effects on children's self-esteem, body image, manipulation of their young minds into purchasing company products, and lastly the sexual portrayal of children in advertising. It would be a lot easier if there was a clear-cut line between offensive and effective sexual advertisements, but there is not. Such advertisements come from Teen People Magazine, Maxim Magazine, and past Calvin Klein advertisements on the internet, all of which have negative effects on adolescents.

Furthermore, advertisements are leading to an unhealthy obsession with good looks and perfect bodies in our youth. The use of sex appeal is causing our society to put an emphasis on appearance and weight, which not only play a role in adults but affects our children as well. A prime example of this comes from a popular advertisement in a June 2002 advertisement in Teen People Magazine. The advertisement was for a Jersey dress. The advertisement pictured a tall, beautiful, blonde model, with an incredible figure. The blonde model was wearing the skimpy dress walking through one baby blue door and into another. The small caption in the advertisement read, "Make a Sh

The negative effects that sexually stimulating advertisements have on adolescents can be harmful to their health. For instance, approximately one percent of adolescent girls develop anorexia nervosa, a dangerous condition in which they can literally starve themselves to death. Another two to three percent develop bulimia nervosa, a destructive pattern of excessive overeating followed by vomiting or other purging behaviors to control their weight. These eating disorders also occur in males, however, it is less frequent. The consequences of eating disorders can be severe. For example, one in ten anorexia nervosa leads to death from starvation, cardiac arrest, or suicide. Also, "with this disorder females lose their menstrual cycle and men usually become impotent." In addition, people with bulimia nervosa consume large amounts of food and then rid their bodies of the excess calories by vomiting, abusing laxatives or exercising obsessively in order to maintain their desired weight (the weight most models in advertising maintain). Secondly, the image young males believe they should posses can lead them to turn to anabolic steroids as a quick solution. Steroids are performance-enhancing drugs. "By taking anabolic steroids, a person's testosterone level can be raised up to a hundred times greater." The increase in testosterone increases anabolic activity, which results in greater muscle bulk. However, the risks it has on a person, not only a teen, are high. Steroids heighten androgenic activity (enhanced secondary sexual characteristics) in males. The side effects can be permanent or even deadly. "Serious side effects are seen in the liver, the cardiovascular, central nervous and reproductive/endocrine systems." Extremely noticeable effects occur in the reproductive system. "In males the testicles shrink by about 20%. They become impotent. Their sperm count can decrease by 90%. Also, gynecomastia (the enlargement of breasts) can be seen in males." The bottom line is that the images our children see in advertisements can affect their self-esteem and how believe they should look. The social pressure that occurs from such advertisements can lead children to drastic measures in order to try to live up to an impossible image.

The same American stereotype holds true for men. Many men believe that they should be tall, good looking, and maintain a body chiseled out of stone. An advertisement that supports this idea came from Maxim Magazine; the advertisement was for Camel cigarettes. The theme of the advertisement was a classy upscale bar. The advertisement depicted the typical tall, dark, and handsome man as the bartender enjoying his Camel cigarett
