A detailed Summary of People

Since the early 1990's Defoe has written many great novels on which he has based his life upon. Out of his writings, Moll Flanders is by far the best description of Daniel's young childhood up to his late adulthood. In this novel he expresses real life situations and compares them to his own experiences he has been through in the past centuries. Defoe assigns causes and motives foe events that reveal his feelings of the world and human nature in his 19th century novel Moll Flanders.

Daniel Defoe, much like his novel, grew up in an environment where you had to play by the rules. If these rules were to be broken you where either killed or placed in jail. Living in this kind of atmosphere gave Defoe a temperament, which can file with sudden violent access, which distinguished the debased forms of so-called Euangelicism.

Defoe became a man with a criminal mind. He was a fugitive and was put in Newgate Prison and was later released by a pardon from the queen. For eighteen months he talked to thieves, pirates, highwaymen, and coiners before he wrote his famous novel Moll Flanders. Although most of his information came from other prisoners, he lived through most of the incidents he wrote about.

When Moll first came to London she came with the bitterness of life and what it can teach a young girl. She says, "I had been trick'd once by that chest calle'd love" (Defoe 79). A few lines later she says, "Money's Vertue; Gold is fate" (Defoe 79). Later in the book she trys to dress like other particular groups of people on the street as a disguise. She reveals here that she does not want to be known as one unparticular person. In 1723 The London Post ended its sterilization with Molls death, burial, and final will, in which Moll's "real name" (Susan Atkins) appeared (Bachscheider 10).

Throughout the novel Moll's character is concentrated on vanity and greed. She has always wanted to be better than everyone else. Being a gentlewoman at a young age meant a lot to Moll considering that no one in her own family was ever able to obtain such a great title. Critics say that, "Moll is beyond her station in life" (Arnez 66). She seems to find comfort in her many husbands and lovers like: the Gentleman of Bath who is Moll's provider and six years a husband. Her Lancashire husband Jemy who really loves her before they split up. The Draper, who was described as, "a tradesman that was rake, gentleman, shoe keeper, and beggar, all together" (Arnez 73). The younger brother Robin who marries Moll by the support of his family. Robin's older brother who tries to seduce Moll with compliments. And then Moll's brother and husband who believed she had a fortune. Although she finds comfort in these people she finds the most in her Governess and midwife who sticks by her side through thick and thin. She grows to love all of these people and learns hard lessons from them.

In this novel by Daniel Defoe we learn that there are many lessons we have to learn in life. Defoe lets us know this through his main character Moll Flanders who is portrayed as him in the novel. He describes her as
