For example in El Salvador, a developing Central American country, the once dense rain forests have been cut down and reduced to piles or rock and sand. This loss of its trees has contributed to an increase in the average temperature and also to the decrease of rainfall. The once blue sky is now gray with smoke and smog from burning garbage and fields. Due to the destruction of the countryside, thousands of people have fled to the cities to escape. San Salvador, the capital city, has more than 11, 000 children deaths every year due to lung and respiratory problems as a result of air pollution, unsanitary living conditions, and neglect of health care. Also, "The Asian Development Bank reports 'Asia is the world's most polluted and environmentally degraded region. More than 60 percent of the rainfall in China's Guandong province is acid rain. Asia's rivers contain up to 4 times the world level of fecal contamination. Asia's forest cover is shrinking by 1% annually. Fish stocks are down 50 percent, and 70-90% of wildlife habitat has been destroyed annually.
