In this story, the narrator tells the reader her first major struggle in life, dealing with a newborn baby at the age of nineteen. I cannot say that I can compare to the struggle Olsen is writing about but I can relate to the struggle of "getting by" in life and fighting to make ends meet. For example, the mother basically lived alone with her newborn child, Emily and also had to work for both of them to survive.
