I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou is a subject on herself. Younger maturing life throughout the years. It was publish by Bantam Books.

Maya Angelou is an award winning poet, playwright, professor, theatrical producer, performer, and singer. The author's purpose for writing this book is she wanted people to know her hardships and struggles that she went through. This book shows her test and trails, which she goes through.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings characterize her growing up in the 1930s in segregated Stamps, Arkansas. Her parents divorced when she was at the young age of three. Annie Henderson, their paternal grandfather, raised her and her older brother Bailey. Maya came face to face with sexism and southern racism that manifested itself in wearying daily indignities and terrifying lynches mob. When Maya was eight she and Bailey went to be with their mother, Vivian, in St. Louis. Vivian's boyfriend, Mr. Freeman molested and raped Angelou. After everyone knew what happened Mr. Freeman was discovered dead having been beaten after these events, Angelou felt blame and humiliation of being sexually abused while assuming that she denied


The eight years after the rape Angelou felt like a survivor than a victim. When she moved to San Francisco to live with Vivian she slowly came out of her silence to be bold and refuse to accept her father's careless habit of playing her off his girlfriend Delores. When hostility reached the top point between Angelou and Delores, Angelou spent part of her vacation living with homeless teenagers in a junkyard. At 16 she hid a pregnancy and succeeded in graduating from high school.

In this book Angelou relates her life now and her life then. She shows why she fights for freedom, and what all influences her to do so. In many of her other books she expresses life and what it means to be free. In one of her poems she talks about a strong black woman. After reading this book I can see where she came from, and what her background life was. She focuses on how hard it was to be a black female during those times.
