Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln was elected president in November in 1860, and took office March 4, 1861. South Carolina had threatened to secede, if Lincoln won the presidency. Four days after the election, legislature met at Charleston and South Carolina unanimously voted to secede. Six weeks later, six other states followed: Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Four more stated wanted join later. The seven secedes created a government, called The Confederate States of America. They chose Jefferson Davis as president. The South wanted their independence. A total of eleven states were succeeding from the Union. In Lincoln inaugural address, he stated that there would be no conflict unless the south provoked it. The attack of Fort Sumpter on April 12, 1861 provoked the North to fight Lincoln was able to gain the support of the crucial Border States of Missouri, Kentucky, M Maryland, Delaware and West Virginia.
