Sand Mountain
With my family and friends, our trailers and trucks loaded up with our various OHV's (off highway vehicles), I travel four hours East on Highway 50 into Nevada to get away from societies boundaries, as we have been doing together for years. A natural wonder that provides acres of sand dunes surrounded by desert and salt flats is where we intend to go. In the middle of these dunes stands a magnificent 880 foot tall mountain of sand responsible for the naming of this site. The Sand Mountain Recreation Area is a marvelous, well-managed, place with an amazing history where I can enjoy my vacations in numerous ways. Sand Mountain Recreation Area is about twenty miles out of Fallon, Nevada in the high desert. It is located near the Fallon Naval Air Station, which is at an elevation of 3,965 feet. Jets are occasionally flying over, so there is no maximum decibel level. That means that there is no limit to how loud you can be, which is rare at places like this. Sand Mountain can be seen from the Highway before reaching the Sand Mountain road. Turning left onto that road, seeing the mountain grow larger as we get closer, gives me the shallow feeling I get in my throat whenever excited with anticipation. At the end of the three mile, stra
My trips to Sand Mountain have various aspects. The people who I go with are usually my family and our friends who make for great entertainment. Holidays like Presidents Day, Easter, and Memorial Day are always great excuses to head to the mountain, but any random weekend certainly works as well. The best times of the year to travel hear is in the fall and spring. In the dry windy summers, temperatures can go over 100 degrees and the winters can be wet and very cold, sometimes freezing. Once the date is decided, everyone is loaded up, we start our drive. The drive can be treacherous if the weather is bad over the two mountain passes. We stop in the closest town to the mountain, Fallon, NV, to fill up the trailer with shower water and the gas cans with gas if we need. Then, it is about a 20 mile drive out of Fallon to get there. Once we have arrived, we set up camp. We must unload everything and set up the inside of the trailer for temporary inhabitance. After all my duties are preformed, I can enjoy all features of the mountain. The view of the mountain in the day and stars at night are breathtaking. After I get over the splendor of my surroundings, I can go for rides in the sand rail and on the quads. When in the sand rail, my heart beats just as fast as we are going. Rides in it give me a rush that leaves me with an ear to ear grin. The quads are fun too, especially when I can push their handling on the trails. This is what really puts a smile on my face. At the end of the riding day, everyone gathers to socialize around a campfire, sometimes until the morning hours. This is a daily process until it is time to pack up. These excursions usually follow this series of events. it dirt road, sits the camping area at the base of the mountain. The site does not have designated individual camping space, but rather random fire pits made of holes dug in the sand surrounded by a circle of rocks to park by. Ahead towers the wall of gold called Sand Mountain with the face and tallest crest directly forward. To the left is the steep slope of the end of the mountain that blends into the more level sand trails, ending where the salt flats begin. These flats extend into the horizon. To the left, the majority of the lengthy mountain bends behind the eyes view, and most of what can be seen is the Nevada Mountains. Also adjacent to the open territory, is the Sand Springs Desert Study Area. Although this area is closed to vehicle travel, walking through can be just as exciting. There are incredibly fascinating reptiles that live among the dry bushes and sand. Sand Mountain is located in the captiva
