MacBeth and Nixon: Two Men on the Path to Power

Shakespeare's MacBeth and Richard Nixon are two personalities who, in their times, experienced phenomenal rises to power from similar situations, their ambition carried them far, despite the costs. Neither of these characters was originally in any position to inherit power, but got there through their own aspirations. They have in common a hunger for power and service and distinction in the military before their ascent to the 'throne.' A throne that they performed malicious acts in order to win.

Neither MacBeth, nor Nixon, were originally in any position to inherit power, but came by it through their own motivation and devices. During his childhood, Richard Nixon was very poor, hailing from a family in Yorba Linda, California. Nixon says of his family and early life, 'We were very poor, but the glory of America is that we didn't know it then' and that he comes from a 'poor, lower-middle-class family' (Nixon, pg.79, 1990).

Nixon could even be said to resent those born to money or power, seeing them as spoiled and undeserving. This was evident in his attack of the debonair and wealthy Alger Hiss later in his career while on the 'House of Un-American Activities Committee. b. Resentment of those born to money and expecting prestige

During their ascents, Shakespeare's MacBeth and Richard Nixon, alike, caused their detractors pain and anguish through unfair and malicious tactics. On the warpath to political office, no accusation was off-limits for Nixon to use, but the most common was the one of communism or being one of its sympathizers. While running for a seat in the house of representatives against Jerry Voorhis, against whom he ran deceptive ads that kept Voorhis from addressing any issues due to having to disprove rumors. While accusing Alger Hiss in court, Nixon claimed that he had membership in a communist group and of spying for the Soviet Union (this was not proven for certain until the 1990's). While running against the liberal Democrat, Helen Gahagan Douglas, for California's seat in the senate, he accused her of communistic leanings and sympathies. Even going so far as to coin the phrase, 'Be an American, vote for Nixon.' Needless to say, he won these elections and rose higher in the ranks of power (www.americanpresident.org) MacBeth had no need to lampoon his opponents, or those who had any chance of all at opposing his rule, he simply murdered them. While Nixon's tactics were subversive and difficult to prove as malicious, Mac Beth's were simply vicious. Early on, in act I, at the urgings of his wife, MacBeth murders Duncan (after he has declared his heir and it is not MacBeth), the very king who had just awarded him
