Generations

Generations and their differences in

House of the Spirits and Fathers and Sons

Throughout time, many generations have come and gone, people live and die, revolutions come and go. One thing that remains constant through all this is the fact that we shall always have a population that contains a varied age range. With the study of House of The Spirits and Fathers and Sons, we learn about the relationships that form between many of the characters ranging from the very young to the very old. This is mostly due to the fact that the old and the young differ in thinking, being raised in different time periods and exposed to different environments, these differences can sometimes cause problems, as seen in the two novels, and the end results can vary simple differences to quarrels that lead to serious outcomes.

As we all know, the young and the old host many differences. The older generation might be set in their ways, as the younger ones are full of new ideas. In House of The Spirits, we can see how this idea of young and old is conveyed through the interactions of Esteban Garcia, an old-fashioned estate owner, and Pedro Tercero Garcia, a young political rebel seeking change to better the life of all the common people. Esteban

might otherwise go unnoticed; the emphasis was put on the need of acceptance and tolerance among each other.
