A Fight with White

A detailed Summary of A Fight with White

14/05/72. The lustrous light blinded Jamul. He tried to open his eyes but was having great difficulty. Suddenly he heard the patter of two little feet venturing towards his bedroom door. He waited anxiously for his customary wake up call. A soft, warm kiss was placed upon his forehead. "Morning Lilly", he said sleepily as he rose from his pillow slowly to close his blinds.

Jamul was a single dad of a one-year-old girl Lilly. He was only 17 when she was born and now at 3 years old she couldn't be more perfect. Her beautiful brown eyes and long spiral curls framed her face. She was very petite and delicate. She was so thoughtful and mature for her age. Her shelves were full of stories which Jamul would read before she fell asleep. She was Jamul's life .He would go to the ends of the earth for her. She was the reason he woke up in the morning and went to work. Jamul's girlfriend left due to a drug addiction, and now whenever Jamul left for work, his mother would stay the night and watch her in the morning. Jamul had brought Lilly up in a small ghetto south west of the Bronx, New York.

Jamul put on his rugged jeans and worn t-shirt hastily. "Lilly please go and get grandm

Jamul left the hospital 2 weeks later and made his journey home by tram. He kept his job as a gardener and continued to board the same bus everyday. His attack was nothing out of the ordinary. It happened to thousands of blacks everyday. The streets were unchanged; everybody looked and acted in the same way. Jamul knew that this had to change. He couldn't just sit back and let his attackers attack another innocent black citizen. This was America. The land of dreams and success.

The tram wheezed to an abrupt stop and he got off. Only then did he realise where he was. Jamul had got off in white territory. The shops and apartment blocks were scrawled with racist gestures. Jamul felt terror burn in the pit of his stomach. He knew he had to leave, for Lilly's sake. It was far too dangerous here. Even breathing in this area could pose a threat to his life. He started to jog down the avenue. The rain and wind stung his face and his sneakers were soaked through. Jamul breathed a sigh of relief as he approached the corner of the street. He was just about to board another tram back home when out the corner of his eye he noticed an old man lying on the ground. The man was white, tall and thin, wearing only a vest and trousers, which were soaked through. Jamul never thought twice about helping him. White or black this man was in danger of his life. Jamul left the tram and walked cautiously towards the man. He stood about two foot from the man He looked around for sign of any thugs and then slowly bent down to feel for a pulse. Just as he touched the mans neck his eyelids flew open revealing two petrified bloodshot eyes. The man starting yelling loud enough to wake up the entire block. Jamul jumped back in complete shock.

As soon as he arrived at the Court of Justice the media swamped him. Jamul picked up Lilly and held her closely. This was a very different environment and she was a little scared The reporters were firing questions from all over about what happened but he just tried to ignore them as he swiftly took up the stairs two at a time. Jamul, his mum and Lilly all stood outside the calling area and waited anxiously. "Jamul Campbell! To courtroom two please". They all entered and stood their ground. Jamul stood in the box for the next three hours and faced so many questions that they would tear the average man to shreds. It wasn't only Jamul's attackers who faced questioning but 'the old man' who he had tried to help in the first instance. Jamul didn't feel any hostility towards this man, as he probably would have reacted in the same way. Thinking back at it now, it must have been a shock to wake up from the pavement while lying on your back and being stared at by somebody, who because of their black they are perceived as the enemy.

After the break the judge entered the courtroom and so everybody stood up. Jamul, his mum and Lilly all held hands and awaited the verdict. " On the day of May 14th, this year, Jamul Campbell a father of one, was attacked for no a
