Mr Proctor: A Truly Righteous Man?

Isaac Asimov once said, "Never let your sense of morals get in the way of doing what's right." However, this is precisely what Proctor is doing as he refuses to go to court and testify. This is the John Proctor that we see in the Beginning of the play. However, I suggest to you that this is not how he is at the end of the play. His attitude is totally and utterly changed.

When John Proctor enters a room there is a definite feeling of power, or a strong-willed, strong-armed man. You get a definite picture of this big-boned man in overalls with his gun looking around with an "evil eye". It seems that he's very well mannered, and that he appreciates and respects his wife. "I mean to please you, Elizabeth."(pg.50) It almost seems like he is being cautious and trying very hard to avoid pushing the "wrong buttons" on his wife. I also see that this picture of strength we saw was definitely a cover-up. He becomes very defensive, and it shows his actual insecurity.

As Cheever enters later on to take away Proctor's wife, I can see the protective side of Proctor. It seems that he feels like Cheever is a "bad guy" and he has come to take away his companion with no evidence. I see him trying e

verything possible to keep his wife from being taken away. He even tries to put the blame on Mary Warren when they find the poppet and he says to Mary "You stuck that needle in yourself?" Then when she admits that she did Proctor says to Hale "What say you now?" signifying that Mary is the culprit and not his wife.

After finishing the play, it is very easy to step back, and look at the way Proctor changed throughout the play. Some might argue that there was no transformation whatsoever inside of Proctor. That this was still just another desperate attempt to save his name and to trick the Court and the entire Congregation. This is entirely false in all aspects. John shows definite signs of his transformation. It is very noticeable that he has finally given up his good name, and he truthfully wants to be good in God's eyes. In not signing the confession he is saying that he is sorry for not confessing sooner and he feels like a very evil sinner.

John Proctor is somewhat of a coward (or little pup) in my eyes, since the only reason that he agrees to go to court to testify is to safe his wife. It's almost as if he doesn't care about anything unless it directly affects him.

John Proctor was born a stubborn and very self-conscience man. But he died a man of God, who can be respected and modeled after. Isaac Asimov once said, "Never let your sense of morals get in the way of doing what's right." Well it is finally apparent that John Proctor followed and be
