Imperialism in America

To gauge the United States as an Imperialistic government, you have to first define several key parts of the question. First of all, what is Imperialism? The dictionary defines it as "the policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political hegemony over other nations", which means that it is the practice of expansion and control, whether through peaceable means or otherwise. Rome, the Ottomans, England, Spain, France under Napoleon. So how did the United States come to be an Imperialistic power then?
