Like many other short stories, "Roman Fever" by Edith Wharton uses irony to make the story more effective. This story shows how young girls, during the late nineteenth century, were taken on the Grand Tour, where they were put on display for potential rich husbands, and to view the wonders world in Europe. The two mothers and daughters in the story are currently on this tour, and the mothers sit on a terrace in Rome discussing the past and comparing their daughters. This story is brought to life by the uses of character names being ironic, dramatic irony, and also verbal irony.
Edith Wharton carefully draws the characters to show there opposition. The mothers in the story are friends but very unlike each other. Mrs. Grace Ansley is described as small, pale, and sort of delicate. Throughout the story, Grace is shunned by Slade. The name Grace Ansley was given to this character to help the reader to depict the two women. Grace is shown as quiet, graceful, and soft spoken, whil
