I. Purpose: To determine the percent yield of the compound Magnesium
II. Hypothesis: The percent yield of magnesium oxide will be 99%.
1) Set up the ring stand with the ring. Place the clay triangle on the ring and place the burner under the clay triangle.
2) Clean the crucible and its lid with water. Heat them to dry, then keep heating for 5 minutes. Allow cooling for 5 min. For the rest of the lab, use tongs in handling the crucible.
3) Record the mass of the crucible with its lid.
4) Placed a coiled strip of Mg ribbon that is less than 0.3g in the crucible. Record the mass of the Mg ribbon and the crucible.
5) Over a high flame, heat the uncovered crucible until the Mg ribbon ignites. When it starts burning, quickly cover the crucible with the lid and remove the burner from underneath the triangle.
6) After smoke production has ceased, replace the burner and reheat the crucible. Once the crucible has been heated for 10 min check to make sure the reaction is completed.
