The Rising Maturity Level of Holden Caulfield
In J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye the narrator and main character Holden Caulfield tell the reader a brief history of his life in which focuses on the events that occurred after he flunked out of his prep school Pencey. The events that Holden focuses on take place in New York City during a period of a few days. During these events Holden develops a maturity level that starts at a sophomoric persona to one that shows he has become a mature young adult. Holden views James Castle, a former student at a previous school he attended, as an example of he must strive for as a teen who is struggling to find what he stands for morally. Holden explains that Castle was a quiet individual who also one who stuck up for what he believed in. Castle even stuck up for what he until death. Even when he would not take back a statement he made about another student even when the student and the students friends cornered castle in his room. He found the only escape from the students he could, jumping to his death from his window. Hold
Another example of when Holden starts maturing is when he is in the room with Phoebe and he can't name anything he likes. Holden reacts to this question by saying, "Boy, she was depressing me"(Salinger 169). The only three things he can name that he liked were Allie, James Castle, and talking to Phoebe. The reason this is a time when Holden matures is because he gets really depressed when he cannot think of anything he liked. The reason Holden gets so depressed is because two of the people he names are dead. That's why he is so lonely all the time. Holden finds things in common with Allie and James Castle and since they're both dead he feels, in the back of his mind, that he should also be dead which makes him depressed. In conclusion, Holden is slowly forced to mature, and by the end of the book as Holden watches Phoebe as she rides the Merry-go-round and has the feelings of a proud parent. This proves that he has matured from the beginning.
