The Trinity
The Holy Trinity is one of the most important and key beliefs in our faith. The belief in one God who is three persons is a belief that sets us apart from the non-Christian religions in this world. However, the Trinity is not an easy belief to describe or understand. It is the most pure, holy, and mysterious being that exists. We cannot even comprehend the power, love, holiness, and majesty that is present in such a being. God does want us to know of its existence though, and include many truths about the Trinity in Holy Scripture. In fact Holy Scripture is the most important tool we can utilize in order to gain an understanding of this most holy being. When we use the Holy Scripture to gain knowledge of the Holy Trinity we must realize there is different ways of describing it, depending upon the author. The first that we will look at is the Johannine writings. The Johannine writings include the Gospel of John, the First Letter of John, and the book of Revelation. In these books we gain a good understanding of Jesus' relationship with God. Probably one of the best quotes for describing this relationship would be in John 20:17. In this verse Jesus tells Mary Magdalene to tell his disciples, "...I am ascending to my Father and
God wants us to learn about himself and the Trinity, thereby drawing us closer to him. This is why he tells us so much about this divine mystery through the Holy Scriptures. That is why the Holy Scriptures are so important to us as we learn about the trinity. In them it is God himself teaching us about this mystery. It is God himself leading us to the truth. When we look at all of these we gain an understanding of the existence of the Holy Trinity. We see that although three make up one being, they are at the same time separate beings, equal to each other, and each with a different relationship to the other. The Gospel of Matthew starts out stating in that Jesus is the child of the Holy Spirit. (Mt. 1:18) This statement in light of the Johannine writings is vital in showing us the complete unity of the Holy Spirit with the other two members of the Trinity. This statement in no way contradicts what was said throughout John's writings. In fact this statement reinforces the unity of the Holy Trinity. It helps us to see the relationship between God and the Holy Spirit. If Jesus is the child of both God and the Holy Spirit, then these two beings would have to also be one single existence. However, we must still recognize that they are still complete separate beings also. The fact of their separateness can also be seen in the language of Jesus Christ. This is because Jesus only refers to God as his Father. He never refers to the Holy Spirit with this Father language. Jesus may be the child of both, as they are one, but as separate beings God is his Father. The important thing we can see from this fact is that all three share a relationship with each other. These Johannine writings also shed light upon the third person in the Holy Trinity, the Holy S
