I believe that Will and Jack represent two totally different people of the gay community. The way the writers portray them to the masses are non-threatening, lovable characters. Although both are lovable characters, Will is portrayed as a more conformed "acceptable" homosexual male to the straight public. He does not really retain any of the stereotypical preconceived notions that many people may have of a homosexual male. Jack on the other hand, is a more "flamboyant" character if you will. Unfortunately there are factors that are left out of the show such as minorities of different races. Other cultures besides American are excluded. It doesn't have homeless or mentally unstable characters, so a lot of different societal symbols are absent. Rarely are these other issues discussed in great deal on this show or many other comedies for that matter.

The writers are careful to not make any of these characters too offensive to the masses. All four characters represent four different aspects of the human experience. All have redeemable qualities about them such as their strong love and support of one another, even though the show is fraught with sarcasm.
