True Lies
Some argue that movies such as, "Saving Private Ryan", and "Schindler's List" that are loosely based on historical fact provide an inaccurate account of history. Others say they provide people of the present with a look into the past. Whether or not the historical facts of these movies are one hundred percent correct, they do serve a purpose other than pure entertainment. Movies like Brave Heart and Gladiator that attract large audience create interest in people about the past. A movie has the ability to plant a seed in a persons mind. Curiosity is human nature. When we find something that interests us we are motivated to find out all we can on the topic. Curiosity is one of the biggest driving forces of human beings. From the time we are able to explore the world around us it makes us do what we do. When we watch small children we can recognize the role curiosity plays. When something catches the attention of a child, he or she focuses on it and the can be entertained by it for hours, or even days. In the same way if a teenager or a young adult goes to see "Schindler's List" with little or no prior knowledge of the Holocaust, more often than not that person is going to be intrigued and compelled to find
It turns out that the people in the movie were not real and the story was mostly fiction. Some would say that using that movie or others like it is wrong because it gives people a false sense of history. History in its essence is an amassed collection of facts that, put together in chronological order, makes up the past. To use something that deviates from that collection to teach would be teaching inaccurate information. For the students who are taught using this method would have false perceptions and they may use this false perception in the future. In high school it was all my history teacher could do to get somebody to crack there book. We happened to be reading about World War II at the time "Saving Private Ryan" was released. I saw it with my friends because I heard the action sequences were incredibly vivid. When I left the movie it took me a while to calm down from the action in the movie, but I was also interested to find out more of why these young men were there. I knew my grandfather was a veteran of World War II. I asked my mother if she remembered any stories that he had told her. She didn't remember anything but she told me that he had left his job at general electric and his girlfriend, who was my grandmother, to go fight for his country when he was nineteen years old just like the young men in the movie. When I went back to class on Monday somebody asked if happened in the movie was real. This created a stir amongst the class. The teacher was so overjoyed that we actually were interested in learning something that he got permission from the principal at my catholic high
