Internet Censorship
SEX, DRUGS, and ANARCHY! Now, that I have your attention, we can talk about Internet censorship. Inappropriate material will always be on the internet, and there is no way to completely hide it. All this censorship will damage the atmosphere of the freedom to express ideas on the Internet; therefore, government should not encourage censorship so much. The Net has no certain authority figure, and this makes a problem about what things are appropriate. "As anyone who has spent even a short amount of time on the Internet knows, pornography does not magically appear on one's screen the moment your modem connects with a server; 99 percent of the time, explicit material must be sought" (Jarvis, 1). The topic of whether is it necessary to have censorship on the Internet has been argued all over the world. There are a lot of web pages on the World Wide Web devoted to this issue, and many of them are even filtered. People can think how they want to think. As long as it does not directly affect you, why should it matter? If a topic is on your screen that you do not like, simply close it out and move on. There is no complete right way to block inappropriate material on the Internet. Either there is to much blocked material or no
If you want your children to be protected from the things you do not like to see, do it yourself. Take the responsibility to monitor your children. When you limit access to information, no matter how offensive to you, you are limiting the rights of those who do not find it offensive. Many parents today do not take the responsibility of monitoring their own children and want someone else to do it for them. Actually, only a very small part of the Internet contains inappropriate material. Most people do not use the Net for pornography. Even if there is no bad material on the Internet, children could also be exposed to inappropriate material in tons of other places. Censoring the Internet will only get rid one place where minors can find inappropriate material. People have to come out with an approach to solve the problem in a better way: "In a survey comparing a traditional search engine with a popular 'family-friendly' search engine, the Electronic Privacy Information Center attempted to access such phrases as 'American Red Cross,' 'San Diego Zoo,' '11 Smithsonian,' 'Christianity,' and 'Bill of Rights.' In every case, the 'friendly' engine prevented access to 90% of the relevant materials, and in come cases 99% of what would be available without filters" (Neimann, 1). Internet was originally a place for people to freely express their ideas worldwide. Censoring the Internet is basically impossible. "...'good' or 'bad' speech is subjective and it is not the government's role to so determine; and this individuals bear the responsibility to determine what is appropriate for themselves and their families" (Calvin, 1). It will violate the freedom of speech and free id
