Cross Generational Relationships (argument for)

A detailed Summary of Cross Generational Relationships (argument for)

Cross-generational relationships have been the subject of a heated debate for some time now. A generation is a group of living beings making up a single step in the line of decent from an ancestor, or defined as a group of individuals born and living contemporaneously. There are many different types of cross-generational relationships. Some are the Romantic style where the couple experiences a huge gap in age between the two; another could be a friendship between two people of different generations and yet another example is the parent and child relationship. These are only a few examples of many. The generation that a person is born into can play a major role in an individual's life. Cross-generational relationships are a positive influence on both parties in the relationship.

There are four different types of generations. These four groups can be described as: Traditionists (born between the years 1900-1945), Baby Boomers (born between the years 1946-1964), Generation X (born between 1965-1980), and the Millennial (born between the years of 1981-1999). "Each group has completely different sets of eyes and values. One such issue is job-hopping: To a traditionalist, it?s disloyal. To a boomer its risk. To a gen X'r it's resume

building. To a millennial, it's pursuing multiple careers" (Clashing 59). Traditionalists grew up with things often being scarce because of the two world wars and the Great Depression. This generation had plenty of opportunities to learn without. Baby Boomers are known for their competitiveness. They had to fight for much of what they've achieved in corporate America against a number of their peers competing for the same jobs and promotions.? Boomers have again and again been labeled the 'Me Generation,' in part because they were privileged to be able to focus on themselves and where they were going instead of needing to sublimate the needs of individuals as the Traditionalists had done" (Collide 24). The X Generation is extremely resourceful and independent. They count on their peers and themselves to get things done. The Millennial Generation has been introduced to the wide variety of technology. "Technology moved even closer to this generation; in fact it moved right into their pockets. This generation has had access to cell phones, personal pagers, and computers since they were diapers'' (Collie 28). Each generation has different aspects and opinions to offer. With so many different generations creating friendships, all generations can benefit positively from a cross generational relationship.

The younger individual of the cross-generational relationship also benefits a great deal. The younger generation looks to the generation prior as the teacher in the relationship. The teacher provides experience, stability, and history. "These older adults are more educated, active, and healthier than elders of decades past. Inviting them to be involved in student activities can make a big difference in their life" (Grandparent 40). Their are currently many orginaztions set up to benifit the younger generations. Big brothers and Big Sisters for example is an organization set up for children who are with out them to ack as role models and give as adive givers durin a younger generations time of need. The older generations have already been through and experienced what the
