Macbeth scene one
What is it that constitutes great writing in our society? What justifications can award a writer with such prestigious honor as nationally establishing a play or sonnet as truly fantastic? Whatever questions people strive to define as substantial reasoning for greatness lie in all of Shakespeare's writings. Parallel to the rest of his writings, in act one of Macbeth, Shakespeare applies such items as mood, characterization, motifs and themes to unfold throughout the play. The mood of Shakespeare's Macbeth is dark, brooding, and evil, which is developed firstly in the opening act by both the witches and Macbeth's sickening mind. The mood of the play from beginning to the end is of devastation, destruction and gloom. The mood of suffering and degrading is emphasized as the play proceeds. This can be foreshadowed to the reader by the first lines of the witches as well as how we can envision Macbeths character itself. The three witches that Macbeth and Banquo meet are also called the "weird sisters."(Macbeth I.ii. 20-25) In Old English wyrd meant "fate." And it is part of their role in the play to act as the forces of fate as well as set the mood of destruction, or at this point, possibilities. Othe
In Macbeth, the use of the supernatural through the witches, the visions, the ghost, and the apparitions is a key element in making the concept of the play work and in making the play interesting as well as connecting with the first setting Shakespeare inscribed. The use of the supernatural occurs at the beginning of the play, with the three witches predicting the fate of Macbeth. This provides a foreshadowing clue to what the future holds for Macbeth. "When the battles lost and won" (I.i. l-4) was said by the second witch. Meaning that every battle is lost by one side and won by another. Macbeth's fate is that he will win the battle, but will lose his time of victory for the battle of his soul. With all these different moods, characters and motifs placed into the reader's minds with the first act, as well as through out the play, one can easily connect the overall tone of Macbeth to the beginning features. Shakespeare used such analytic sources for the first act to successfully unfold the idea of the play. This, combined with other marvelous strategies, I feel, has helped to make Shakespeare known as truly a great writer. A motif or theme can be expressed as a repetitive idea through out a writing that seems to voice a central idea. Such motifs could be seen in darkness, blood, sleep and unnaturally. Darkness in our society is indicative of evil. For instance, a Black cat, a dark night, and a dark place are all symbolic of Diablerie. Writers may use these symbols to describe an evil character or setting. Shakespeare employs the imagery of darkness in Macbeth to describe the agents of disorder. The witches, Macbeth, and Scotland are all described as dark because they represen
