Is One Not Enough

Polygamy, or plural marriage is a legal practice in most countries where one man can have more than one wife at the same time. Elizabeth Joseph, the author of "My Husband's Nine Wives" can relate to such life style because she is part of a polygamy marriage. When Elizabeth married her husband Alex, he had six wives, now he has a total of nine. Elizabeth enjoys her way of marriage, saying it is helpful to her career, mothering duties and being a wife. From the help of the other women in the house, Elizabeth can relax and that can lessen some of the stress from everyday responsibilities that piles up when you are only one woman in the household rather than many. When I first heard of polygamy and that there was such thing, first thing that came to my mind was, it is not normal, not traditional. It bothered me to know that a man can marry as many women, have many children and say he loves them all the same. I believe polygamy is wrong and against our image of a traditional family.

Although in our society the image of a normal family has changed, nothing can be as drastic as a polygamist family. Toda

With polygamy the man cannot really become intimate with one wife because he is shared and must be with a different one almost every day. This may only mean neither of the women may have the full support of her husband when she may need it the most. Instead, like in the life of Elizabeth and many other women living her life style, they must make appointments to be with their husband, given that the women do not live with their husband. Why must marriage be like a visit to the doctor? The way I see it is the man has the luxury of having many women and the woman must settle for sharing her husband with other women as they come.

y you will find single mothers, single fathers, single mothers living with their boyfriends and visa versa. But even those families look normal when compared to polygamy and its life style. In cultures such as the Muslim, polygamy is very normal and even encouraged, however, in these cultures the man having wealth is a big factor. The women are in a way ranked as they come, first wife, second wife, etc. the first wife always having more control and authority over the house and what goes on which
