The War After
In the late 1920's a German dictator and War veteran called Adolf Hitler rose to power in Germany. In his campaign he promised the people of Germany that he would make their country great again. German voters loved Hitler's optimism, all of Europe was caught up in the depression and the German people saw Hitler as a way to escape it. Hitler soon realised that the more he offered the more people supported him, other World powers saw him as simply another dictator promising his people things he couldn't achieve. It was not obvious what Hitler's plans were at this stage but if he was planning war from this early on then it is very unlikely that the world powers would have ignored him. When the Nazi party, lead by Hitler rose to become the leaders of Germany one of the first things Hitler did was to go against the Treaty of Versailles. In his views and many of the German people the Treaty was totally unfair, the winning powers had made it and they had thrown so many different rules at Germany that there was no possible way Hitler could be a successful leader if he obeyed every one of them. Hitler withdrew Germany from the failing League of Nations and astonishingly from the Geneva disarmament conference that was set
up prevent war on a major scale. Although it is easy to interpret Hitler's actions as violent, all he was simply doing was freeing German, from all its loose ties. Hitler's ambition was to make Germany great again, and that could never happen if they had to keep following various rules of things that didn't involve them. In, what seems like one of the last acts leading to World War 2 Hitler had signed a pact with the Russian leader Stalin. The pact entailed that neither country would attack the other when and if war came in Europe. For months Stalin had been frantically trying to make an agreement with the Western powers, Stalin was desperately afraid of having to stand-alone. Hitler seemed to particularly hate the Russians. He was anti-communist and he absolutely hated the Soviets. So why did Stalin and Hitler reach an agreement? At one point Stalin was willing to unite with anyone in order to prevent Germany trying to invade Russia. Stalin had brought the Soviet Union into the failing League of Nations, this was strange because before the soviets had joined they despised the league and acted harshly towards it. The reasons the Russians had joined were because they were huge believers of collective security and by joining the league they hoped to be able to form alliances. Stalin's constant attempts to try and unite with Western powers were persistently failing. Stalin realised that the French and British weren't being co-operative and were being half-hearted about the entire situation. Stalin sent his newly appointed foreign minister Molotov. Molotov was sent to negotiate with Germany. The Western powers were being totally unfair on the Russians, as part of the agreement Russia was suppose to help struggling Eastern powers, but in another part it stated that the Russians weren't allowed to go through those countries to get Germany. The Germans had made Stalin an incredible offer. The Germans had offered to give the Soviets the Baltic States if Russia agreed not to attack Germany. It was that simple - there was no need for the Russian to get involved in any sort of conflict. The Russians only had one genuine offer so in September 1938 he put pen to paper and signed a deal with Germany. Hitler did what seemed right. The Sudeten Germans were unhappy, Germany were still trying to prove that they were a major power in Europe again and that land had belonged to Germany before World War one. Hitler was simply taking back what was his, his people had been hurt and he wouldn't stand for it. It's not a violent man that rescues people from bad leaders; it's a strong man. There may have been a slight element of greed in Hitler's plans but it couldn't have been much. The state of the Sudetenland was terrible and it's not the sort of land that a country would be proud to be associated with. The major European powers had a policy of appeasement, this meant that they would give Hitler some of what he wanted in the hope that large-scale fighting wouldn't break out and Hitler would not try to take any more. Hitler was an opportunist, he took his chances repeatedly and had the European powers been prepared to challenge him at an earlier time it is likely that he would've stopped. Hitler did not have a large army, he had nearly no war funds or weaponry, and his Navy was kept to an
