The Joy Luck Club: Novel vs. Movie

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan was a very intriguing and exhilarating novel. I was very curious to see how the moviemakers were going to transform this amazing novel onto the big screen while still maintaining Amy Tan's original themes and concepts. Now, obviously, there are going to be a lot of similarities, considering the movie was based on the novel, but what I seemed to notice was the differences. Some of the major differences that I noticed included the varying formats of the movie from the novel, the organization of the stories, and the specifics of the given stories. These differences didn't have a major effect on the movie's similarities to the book, but they do show how the book, originally, was better than the movie.

During the opening credits I noticed Amy Tan's name a lot. She was not only include


d under the title based on the novel written by, but also (if I recall correctly) as an executive producer and a couple other key, decision-making roles that helped this movie to be as similar to the novel as possible. Even though the original author of the novel was on board as they created the movie, several key differences still managed to catch my attention. The first difference that I noticed was the different format of the movie as compared to the book. In the book the stories were arranged with on story of the Woo family, followed by one of the St. Claire family, and so on. In the movie they presented all of the Woo family's stories at once, then all of the St. Claire family, and so on. This difference leads into my next difference very well.
