Director Martin Scorsese does a great job in controlling the flow of information in this movie. The beginning of this scene shows the main character Jake La Motta and his brother, Joey sitting around a diner table. We start to hear a very strange dialogue between Jake and he's telling his brother to hit him as hard as he can to show that he can take it. He is doing this to show how he can beat anyone in the ring and prove his manhood. He is also trying to show his brother how he can take pun

ches without feeling much pain. His brother complies with his request and we have the camera going from brother to brother showing him being punched and his brother receiving each violent blow to the face. This whole scene follows the classical continuity rule of editing which talks about match on action. This is done when Joey punches his brother and in the next shot we see his fist continuing that motion in a very smooth cut. We then see them sitting opposite one another which gives the shot and reverse shot technique. We see behind both shoulders of these actors as the action is talking place. Each shot feels very rhythmic and flows very naturally in the space and time provided.

    The costumes used in this movie are very elaborate and very fashionable from that point in history. Most of the time that we see an actor that is wearing very detailed clothing from that time period. Costumes can lure the viewer into the world of early New York lifestyle by showing them how people used to dress. Every time we see our main character he is always dressed up to the highest standards of the upper class. We get the feeling that this man wants to establish his credibility with these elite group of people. He is doing this by always trying to impress them and never go against anything they have to say. The clothing helps to establish him as a member of this group and that he must not deviate from the norm or he will be banned. The idea of clothing and belong is very strong in this movie. Outfits can essentially make or break how people look at you and your place in this society. He struggles his hardest to conform which causes his urge for the forbidden woman to be pushed aside. He becomes faithful to the women he was meant to be with and lives out his life with her and this society of individuals.

    When looking at these movies one can clearly see similarities between the two. Both of these movies are time period pieces which mean they take place sometime other than the time that these were filmed. This means they both had to utilize appeal from those time periods to give these movies an authentic look. You can tell that in "The Age of Innocence" a ton of research was done to portray an elite person who lived in New York City in those days while clothing wasn't a big deal in "Raging Bull" but was incorporated into the film. The two men in these movies are similar because they both ended up falling in love with women while currently being involved with another individual. They also aren't as bright as their surrounding characters but they do want to live the best life possible. These films are also about the choice people have to make in their own life. It's about how the decisions you make as a young adult can drastically affect the rest of your life.

    When one uses lighting in a black and white movie they tend to over do it and have everything come out extremely bright on camera.
