Hinduism vs. Christianity
As a child I watch spellbound the movie Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. In this movie, I was scared to death when I saw the beating heart pulled out of a living man, and he continued living. Since that day, the culture of India has intrigued me. A large part of this fascination stems from their religion. "Hinduism is the dominant spiritual way in India. It is entwined inextricably with Indian culture" (Healy pg. xiv). Most Indians are Hindus thus the Indian culture is influenced in a large part by Hinduism. Hinduism is a religion full of many spiritual ideas that seem different from those of the Christian philosophy. To a Christian it may be difficult to understand what it is exactly that a Hindu believes. I found that Hinduism like Christianity has as many seemingly different forms to worship as a tree has branches. Still I was able to find some common ground amongst all the Hindu sects. Although it seems that the differences between these two religions is irreconcilable. There is actually some common ground in regards to how both religions view god, and in the images they use to worship him. Also how each group views each other makes for an interesting dilemma that brings these
two seemingly different religions together in many forms. Hindu and Christian Religious Images Many modern Christians seem to have started thinking along similar lines. They compare religion to a tree with many braches. Each person finds the branch that is most comfortable because all braches lead back to the truck- who is God. This idea is one very similar to the elephant track of the Hindus. Since there is one God, all will be with God some day. It doesn't matter how one gets there so long as one makes it. Christians and Hindus are striving for the same goal, unity with God through living a good life. Both religions teach that one must live a meaningful life doing good deeds to achieve oneness with god or 'salvation.' Although each religion has seemingly different ideas the important aspect is that they are just culturally different ways to worship the same god. Their god is the same incomprehensible God. Each religion uses images to remember this god and worship him. The outlook of each religion on other beliefs is continuing to draw them closer together. All these seeming conflicts are just an excuse to cause problems and turmoil. The differences that seemingly make these two religions different are actually an illusion and in the end, both revolve around the same belief. Hindus have a basic belief in God, as do most other religions. Hindus believe that God is everywhere and is in everything (Maharshi). Although from a Christian viewpoint, Hindus have a confusing way to worship him. Hindus worship many different gods and if asked, who is God? They will name off the god that the particular person worships. This is confusing to Christians because of the seemingly polytheistic viewpoint. So many Christians are left in doubt as to who the god of the Hindus is. They use many seemingly different forms in which to worship him. So do Hindus really have this polytheistic form of worship? To the Hindus there are many forms of God. It really doesn't matter the name or the face or even the form they chose to worship. Any god they worship, at the same time they are still worshiping the divinely true god. "The God that one honors is worshiped as the supreme God. Each of the great Gods represents the one divine" (Vroom pg. 54). Hindus believe in many gods but in the end there is only one true and divine god. Even though there are, many forms and figures related to god it doesn't matter which form is worshiped. In the end, there is only one great and incomprehensible god. Therefore, no matter which god a person worships they are still honoring the divinely great god. Is this Christian god really so different from the Hindu belief? Both religions have v
