Speaking, it is as different as night and day or shall I say "whack and dope." Is it possible for today's youth to bridge the gap between today's "hip" terminologies and still keep the essence of yesterday's eloquent speech? In this paper I want to examine the basic aspects of grammatically correct speech, today's way of speaking as shared by youths in my era and explore the possibilities of combining the two.
First, grammar by definition is a way of speaking or writing as judged by the conventional grammatical rules. Grammatical rules that are steadfast in making comprehension of words, thoughts and ideas more easily digestible by those who share our language. This is a constant. We know inherently that the subject comes at the beginning of the sentence followed by the predicate and more important that the two must combine in a meaningful way to make a complete thought. Dabbled between these kings of sentence structure we use "linkers or helpers" to further enhance the meaning of our thoughts. This rule wi
ll never deteriorate. But I dare ask the question, is it vital for the words of choice to have universal acceptance? I think not. For it is important that every person stemming from their particular culture, regional upbringing and physical environment come to this buffet of speech bearing his or her own dish to serve to the populous.
As far as combining the this modern day urban language with grammatically correct present day language, as directed by our mothers and English teachers, I must admit- it must be kept out of doors and amongst friends for now. While still in its infancy this language used by many youth is still under development and has yet to gain popularity with those not personally involved with its growth and development. But in time it may rise to the socially acceptable speech afforded to the dinner table and English paper. As my dear reader can see for him or her self that I still write in the prescribed way in which I was taught, devoid of "fresh" words that blanket our conversations now.
