"Every Day Use", by Alice Walker, is a short story narrated by the, other of two daughters in the South who is faced with the decision of giving away two heritage quilts to one of the daughters. Dee is the eldest daughter. She is well educated, attractive, and quite persistent. Maggie is the quiet one who isn't as smart as Dee. When Dee visits, she wants two quilts that have been in the family for centuries. The mother has to decide to whom she is going to give the priceless quilts. She ultimately decides to give the quilts to Maggie to with good reasons of doing so.
The mother, who is a rather large woman, wishes Dee would greet her with love and acceptance like she has seen on television programs. "Sometimes I dream in which Dee and I are suddenly brought together on a TV program, where she embraces me with tears in her eyes..."(325) She has the physical strength that could be envied by most men.
