From posters on the wall, to the money in their pockets, members of the Outer Party never escape the omniscient stare of Big Brother. The ministries emphasizing their power over the people through their slogans: War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength. In the world of Oceania, these make complete sense because they are all forms of manipulation executed by the Party. However, could these ideas the slogans present apply to modern society?Winston writes in his diary that, "If there is hope it lies in the proles" (60) because they make up 85% of Oceania's population. Although free from the scrutinizing eye of a telescreen and corrective actions of Thought Police, many of the proles endured heavy physical work (61) and all lived in incredibly poor living conditions.
