Miranda

The following essay includes a concise introduction of Miranda, and a profound elucidation of the gist of the story. Characters will be discussed as the twist and turns of the story. Also there will follow an attempt of interpretation of the ending. Afterwards I would like to give my view on the dilemma of abortion.

Miranda is an 18-year old girl that moves to Boston to go to school. She has to leave her parents and her boyfriend with whom she is deeply in love. In Boston she learns that she is pregnant and contacts her boyfriend. They start planning a wedding, but Miranda's parents persuade them to cancel the dreams of becoming parents.

Obviously Miranda moved to emancipate from her parents, but when she gets pregnant she seeks their advice. But their involving destroys her morale independence.

The character of Miranda develops emotionally throughout the story. In the beginning we think of her as naive, which we also do in the end. But her character develops her feelings for whatever is inside her; she gets aware of that there is a responsibility.

In the beginning it all seems so wonderful and fairytale-like (Line 6-10: ... and she took his arm as they walked out to the driveway, to his old and dented Plymou

The right to life is the most basic and important right that we have.

While Holly sees sex as a natural thing, a natural need, Miranda sees sex as a sacred thing (Line 165-167: whose eyes and smile were telling her that making love with Michael was a natural but subsidiary part of growing up; that what she felt that night and since meant nothing).

She is not the defiant daughter, but when abortion is mentioned as a way to handle the problem she gets sick (Line 193-194: She would have cried, but she felt dry inside, she was tired and she knew the night was ended). Abortion simply does not fit into the perfect world of Miranda.

That is maybe also one of issues the author wanted to highlight. What is it sex, what makes sex between humans different from sex between animals? Has Miranda a naive attitude towards sex? Maybe there is an ironic point by the author: Miranda was the one who was reluctant and had such romantic thoughts about relationship and commitment, but got punished. While, Holly slept with different men and was the one being unfaithful, but did not get punished.

It is not very appealing being a young mother only caring about diapers and babyfood.

In Boston, Miranda lives together with Holly. Holly is a year older than Miranda and she is the diametrical opposite to Miranda in terms of sex. Instead of one partner she has sex with various men, and what is even worse is that she is cheating on her boyfriend (Line 26-28: ...she could hear Holly moaning in the next room. The sounds and her images excited her, but sometimes they made her sad too; for on most weekends Holly's boyfriend Tom drove up from providence).

In the end the parents reiterate their
