Lyme disease

Lyme Disease, caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, is an inflammatory, usually nonfatal disease transmitted by the bite of ticks, and more specifically, Deer Ticks. These ticks live on deer, mice, dogs, and other animals. This disease has been said to be the second fastest growing epidemic of the twentieth century, behind only that of AIDS. The disease is reported worldwide, but the majority of the cases of Lyme Disease comes from the Northeast American region. When walking in tick infested areas, tuck your pants in your socks, wear shoes, and if possible, a long sleeve shirt. Also, since ticks are dark in color, wear light colored clothing so you can easily spot them if they get on your clothes. Also, check yourself and your pets often. If ticks are found, remove them immediately with tweezers. Insect repellant is also a good way to prevent getting this disease.

If unfortunately you catch this disease, you should get treated immediately. Nowadays, treatment with antibiotics will not always cure you of any infections this disease may cause. As stated before, the LymErix vaccine may help prevent it. Although you may not always be cured using antibiotics, it is important to use them because they can reduce infection greatl
