Flatland

This must have been the most interesting book I have read. I found it very easy to visualize the many descriptions and most of the time I understood what the author was trying to say before he described them in detail. What's interesting to me is the fact that this book, even though it is science fiction, captures human stubbornness and inequity. We are so close minded to new things. I bet there have been so many times that the answers to many of our questions have been right in front of us but we are so set in our ways that we just can't grasp them. I think that our culture and society, our beliefs and values, all play a role in this ignorance. We have been brought up to think a certain way and anything that defies the way we think is simply ignored. We have been raised to be prejudice. I think almost all of us believe that we are open minded, but when we're put to the test most of us give in to our predispositions.

Being a well-respected Victorian educational reformer, I could see why Abbott would write such a book. He constantly took the opportunity to poke fun at the whole institution. He also discussed how people of higher class used many techniques to keep the lower class in order. This is very similar to human history and is still being done today.

The story reminds me of the evolution of science. Just like the square (narrator) finally opened his mind to a new reality, tried to educate others, and was persecuted and jailed for it, Galileo and other scientists went through the same thing. The great thing about this book is that the author boldly portrayed aspects of his society that many people didn't talk about. Things were just accepted because if they weren't there would probably be many rebellions, which there were.
