There is no denying that the drug problem in our country today has reached epidemic proportions. The problem has gotten so out of hand that many options are being considered to control and/or solve it. Ending the drug war may not seem to be the best answer at first, but the so-called war on drugs has actually accomplished very little. Different options need to be considered. Legalization is an option that hasn't gotten much of a chance, but should be given one. Although I do not condone drug use of any kind, I do think drug such as marijuana should be legalized.
The first reason why marijuana should be legalized is because alcohol and tobacco are. There are a lot more people addicted to tobacco and alcohol than marijuana. This is because alcohol and tobacco uses are both emotionally and physically addicted. Marijuana has not been proven to cause a physical addiction. The second reason why marijuana should be legalized is because it would be better for the economy. According to the DEA.gov article, the government spends around seventeen billion on drug control. I'm assuming that number includes the millions of dollars spent to house people in jail for just having marijuana in their possession. Legalizing marijuana would reduce the enormous amount of money spent on enforcement. It is said however that the amount of money spent on drug enforcement is minimal compared to the amount spent on addiction treatment. But I believe that with the economy being as bad as it is, any amount of saving would be helpful. This money can be spent on things such as education. Or the money can be used toward enforcing against much more dangerous drugs. Furthermore, the government would make money from taxing marijuana sales.
