Earthquake At Dawn

The book Earthquake At Dawn is a novel about the greatest earthquake that ever happened in California. The earthquake hit San Francisco in 1806 and would have registered 8.3 on the Richter scale. The author named the book Earthquake At Dawn because she tells you the story about an earthquake in San Francisco and what it did to the city. This earthquake happened at 5:15 am before most people in the city were awake.

The Historical period that this book was written in was the early 1900’s when people were still migrating west. Some of the issues discussed in this book are about the growth of San Francisco and wealth of the people, class of people (servants and their masters), the corruption of Politicians and the differences between people of different social classes. Edith and her servant Daisy are traveling together when the earthquake hits. Daisy’s job as Edith’s servant was about to change. She is very upset that the earthquake will change her plans. She says in one part of the book:

“I counted my sorrows: the idea of returning to Moke Hill so soon filled me with despair. All those months of dreaming and enduring! For an instant I felt desperate enough to run back to the harbor, even to abandon Edith—anything to avoi
