The Historical period that this book was written in was the early 1900's when people were still migrating west. Some of the issues discussed in this book are about the growth of San Francisco and wealth of the people, class of people (servants and their masters), the corruption of Politicians and the differences between people of different social classes. Edith and her servant Daisy are traveling together when the earthquake hits. Daisy's job as Edith's servant was about to change. She is very upset that the earthquake will change her plans. She says in one part of the book:

In this book what I learned about human nature and life during this time period was that lower class people who were servants to rich people wanted more in life. They watched how rich people lived and sometimes wanted the same things. Daisy hated her old life and was afraid she would have to be a servant again. I also learned that some politicians were corrupt. In this story they talk about the mayor of San Francisco and how bad a person he was. He and other people would do things to make money for themselves and their friends. Things that were illegal.

The author makes this book believable because she tells the story about the destruction that the earthquake caused. Edith and Daisy, the main characters in the book, describe the whole city of San Francisco being destroyed and when they are describing it, it makes you feel like you can see what is happening. I read many articles and saw many photos about the earthquake in San Francisco that reminded me of the book and all the things that Daisy had described in the book.
