A detailed Summary of A Raisin in the Sun
What does happen to a dream deferred? This is the core issue in "A Raisin in the Sun". Each character in the Younger household battles with this question at some point, and each of them is faced with another line from the Langston Hughes poem; the last one, in fact, which asks "Or does it explode?" I believe this represents a potential for destruction. A destruction could occur at any level, whether it be self or that of a group, in this case being the unit of the family.
There are many individual differences and conflicts within the family that is reflected through the various interactions that take place during the short time span in which this play occurs. Once again, everything revolves around the dreams of the household members- Beneatha's dream to be a doctor, Walter's dream of having a liquor store, and Mama's dream of having a house where the family can be together more comfortably are some examples of these aspirations.

All doctor's have a story. In this scene, we are shown why Beneatha was driven to practice medicine. This is a very important scene because we're also introduced to how people can lose their faith in something so quickly. Beneatha now claims her dreams to be that of a child or idealist. This is one of the scenes that portrays her identity crisis and shows that even her deep-rooted dream of becoming a doctor can be swayed easily by not truly being certain about her path in life.

However, the more I considered it, the more I realized that the majority of the play is not spent with a content cast of family members.
