Who is Community Aid Abroad?

Community Aid Abroad was founded by Father Gerard Kennedy Tucker, an Anglican clergyman in 1953. After hearing one of Father Tucker's speeches, a few pensioners in a nursing home saved up 12 shillings each week to send to patients in a hospital in an Indian Village. The original group was established in Melbourne and known as Food for Peace. Eventually the groups spread and in 1962 the name was changed to Community Aid Abroad. The new name described the campaign better - they weren't rallying just for food, they were aiming to help communities all over the world. By 1972, 160 groups were established all over Australia and Community Aid Abroad was welcomed under the Oxfam umbrella, becoming the Australian branch of the now well-know Oxfam network. In 1992, Oxfam Community Aid Abroad merged with another NGO - the Australian Freedom from Hunger campaign. By this stage, Community Aid Abroad was now receiving an annual income of over $12 million. Today, Oxfam Community Aid Abroad has more than 170 groups and an office in each Australian State capital, with over 200,000 Australian supporters.

The main aim of Community Aid Abroad is "to find a lasting solution to pove

Less than 10cents of the dollar is spent on administration fees. The funds are immediately connected to local organisations working with poor communities to ensure that the maximum amount of money is put into helping people. Monthly donations from regular donators allow Community Aid Abroad to host long-term projects, addressing and reducing the causes of poverty and injustice.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY COME FROM TO FUND COMMUNITY AID ABROAD?

As long as there are human rights being violated, organisations such as Oxfam Community Aid Abroad will be around. As I stated before, Community Aid Abroad's main aim is "to find a lasting solution to poverty, suffering and injustice" so in the future they will keep pushing for the solution and continuing their work all over the world. Also, trying to give every person in the world the chance to exercise his or her 5 basic rights. With the situation in Malawi, they will keep sending emergency food aid until April 2003. Community Aid Abroad is a truly wonderful campaign and what strikes me the most about it is the sense of community that they work by. They will continue working like this in the future and will surely reap the maximum rewards.

In this way the money is recycled and can keep helping other needy families. It's what's known as Long Term Sustainable Development. The family is helped and then able to continue a better life without constant help from Community Aid Abroad. To solve a problem - you must work from the bottom.
