A detailed Summary of Waiting to Come, In a Love Song

Sometimes waiting seems to be the best way to view life. Sometimes people believe the best way to understand what is going on is to step to the side of reality and watch from the outside. But is this the best way? It can't be too good for a person to stand in one place and watch their life go bye. It seems that a major theme of human nature is to wait for that perfect moment to come. It has been this way since the very beginning. A good example of how this affects one's life is in the poem by T.S. Elliot called "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock." In this poem, he shows me how waiting around for that perfect time, could be the biggest waste of time in a person's life.

Elliot uses a lot of imagery in this poem to help push the poem along and give more clues to show how this man is in a sense, wasting his life away. The first part of the poem that began to show me that this procrastination to move on with life was occurring when the narrator said "In the room the women come and go talking of Michelangelo" (Elliot 13-14). Although these lines didn't take place at the beginning of the poem, I believe that it was the first sign of him waiting for that perfect time to occur. This seems to be the turning point in the poem. He begins to wonder if he should be waiting for this perfect moment, this perfect person to come along and sweep him off of his feet. This becomes his great time of question. He goes into how he has seen many things throughout his life. He has seen many different events, many different people, and many different changes within himself. He begins to realize he is only an average man. There is no need for him to be doing what he is doing. He realizes he isn't a "Prophet." He is not a man of great wisdom or power. He is a simple man. And he begins to see this. This is what starts to get to him emotionally. He is not sure if all this waiting was worth it. He starts to think, would it be worth it? Would he have been happy with these exciting moments that could have taken place? He then describes these things that might have happened. It starts to get to him, because he now realizes, maybe he would have had a good life. He compares himself as to not being Prince Hamlet. There was no need for him to question all of these things in his life. Instead he should have acted on his true feelings. As time passes wisdom comes. He now realizes he has been waiting too long. He sees that this moment, this perfect person isn't coming. He sees that he should have acted fo
