The characters are plain and simple, down to earth and lived during an era in the Deep South where minorities and hill people were considered inferior. Testing different things allows Grisham to be flexible in his writing. It also helps that Grisham can draw from personal experiences. This allows him to be more passionate about his work making the characters almost real.
Luke's character is appealing because it allows us to go into the mind of a seven year old. It's hard to believe that the life of a seven year old could be compelling, but it's easy in the case of Luke. This is because of the natural ability of Grisham to tell a story. Luke may
