Streetcar named Desire
A detailed Summary of Streetcar named Desire
As a director of 'A Streetcar Named Desire' by Tennessee Williams, I would share the view that "No matter how bleak they seem, all plays end in hope." I believe that there is always hope. In the last scene (scene eleven) there is a very bleak, depressing atmosphere, but near the end of the scene hints of hope can be seen. Hope can be seen when Blanche is being helped by the doctor, when she says, "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers." From this line you can see that she has hope, there's hope for her to recover from her illness and that she's willing to receive help.
In scene eleven Stanley's mates are around playing poker again, despite Stanley's promise to Stella that the poker games wouldn't be held at their house anymore. Stella is crying while packing away Blanche's belongings, for she has organised for people to come round and take her sister to an asylum. Blanche is expecting Shep Huntleigh. At the door appear a Doctor and Matron. The Matron comes in to collect Blanche and there is a struggle, but then the Doctor comes in and leads Blanche out of the house without any trouble

In the last scene Blanche is very resigned and reserved due to her trauma, which is mainly caused by Stanley raping her. She is frightened of Stanley and doesn't want to be seen by him or the other men, "Is the coast clear?" As a director I would get Blanche to move around the stage very slowly due to her fear, she would be untouchable and have as little contact as possible with the other characters. Her slight insanity and sadness would be seen in her face to evoke sympathy from the audience. Also her slow movement would make the audience empathize with her.
Stella feels sympathy for Blanche which is shown by her constant sobbing. She still loves her sister. She also feels guilty, for arranging for Blanche to be taken to an asylum but she needs to stay with Stanley. She needs to stay with him for she loves him and for the stability that she needs in her life. She cannot look after the baby, Stanley and Blanche. Her character would walk around sad and mopey unable to save her sister because she is under the influence and control of her husband.
As a director I would have the lighting gloomy and bl
