Sin and Evil

The Scarlet Letter shows throughout the entire book both sin and evil. The people that showed the most sin and/or evil throughout the book were Chillingworth, Dimmesdale, Hester, and Pearl. All of these people have done something evil or have committed some sort of sin that everyone knows about. Chillingworth was the one that demonstrated the most evil. On the other hand Pearl, Hester, and Dimmesdale were the sinners.

Roger Chillingworth came to Boston in disguised as a doctor. He changed his name to Chillingworth so that no one would know who he was. He found out about the sin his wife Hester committed through the towns people. In which case he decided to visit her in jail. At the jail he asked Hester to tell who the father of Pearl was but she refused. "Between thee and me, the scale hangs fairly balanced. But, Hester, the man lives who has wronged us both! Who is he?"(75). After trying to convince Hester to tell who the father of Pearl was he failed, he then asked her for a favor not to tell anyone who he was the father and she agreed. From that moment on Chillingworth was out to seek revenge against the father of Pearl. "Thou wilt not reveal his name? Not the less he is mine.."(76) When he went out into the town as the

Pearl was Hester and Dimmesdales' beautiful daughter. She was thought of by the towns people as evil, because she was born into sin. "The little baggage hath witchcraft in her, I profess," (118). Pearl was a very bright and intelligent young girl. Because of the sin her mother committed she was kept away from the other children, but she managed to be happy alone with her mother. Pearl was a symbol of the scarlet letter, she reminded Hester everyday of the sin that she had committed. The governor thought that Pearl should not be living with Hester, but when they thought it over they came to the conclusion that she was also a part of Hester's punishment. Hester and Pearl had a deep love for each other that kept them going. Although Pearl didn't know who her father was until the end of the book she had always loved him even after his death.

Throughout this entire book there are many examples of both sin and evil, by many people in the town. Chillingworth, Dimmesdale, Hester, and Pearl are only a few but there are many more. In the end before Dimmesdale died he confessed to being Pearl's father, and felt relieved of his sin. Chillingworth died about a year or so after him alone and still upset. The meaning of Hester's A had changed from Adulteress to abl
