The Color of water - Education: They Key to the future

A detailed Summary of The Color of water - Education: They Key to the future

Education is one of the most important things in the world today. You cannot get very far in life if you do not go to college. During the time when James was growing up, education was almost as important as it is today. Ruth knew this, she as a child was worked very hard and suffocated by the strict rules of family and religion as a girl. She knew her children would only get somewhere in life if they do well in high school and went to college and earned Degrees. Whenever her children would ask her why she is different then the rest of them, she just ignored the question; she did not want them to be considered with race.

"Oh Boy...God's not black. He's not white. He's a spirit."

"Does he like black or white people better?"

"He loves all people. He's a spirit."

"It doesn't have a color, God is the color of water. Water doesn't have a color."

She wanted them to know that color did not matter and nothing did as long as they become productive people in society. To keep her kids out of gangs and drugs and all the bad surrounding them, she kept them involved in free

Ruth on the other hand, she worked her children. She constantly told them, education is the important thing in life to worry about and it's the only way you will get anywhere in life. She was active in their school life, made sure they were doing good, and keeping up with school. She would usher them off to any educational valuable activity she could find for them to do. She wanted them to as smart as they could be, and she did a great job of it. When James was failing his classes, she sent him away during the summer, where he was put into summer school. "She enrolled me in summer school and I got thrown out. (Page 142.)" Some of the children didn't do as well as the others, but they all made it into somewhere. Like when James got into Oberlin, he was considered he wouldn't get in because of his low GPA and SAT, but he did. His mother bragged about James to all the other moms for a while. (Chapter 18)

Ruth thought very Highly of education. So highly, that she put twelve children threw high school and college and they all got degrees. She is one of the strongest people I have ever read about, I don't know where she got the strength to put that many kids threw college. I admire her strength, and wish I could be that strong of a person.

My parents view on education is similar to Ruth's, but their actions are a lot different. My parents, know that I need to go to college a
