Nationalism is the love of one's country rather than the love of one's native region and the belief that one's country is superior to that of anyone else's. Italian nationalism became a strong force in the early 1800s when writers and thinkers became intent on reviving interest in Italy's traditions. From nationalism spawned a desire for unification therefore, specific movements were founded allowing people to express these goals of liberation. Three very influential men were present in Italy during the 19th century who played crucial parts in unifying Italy as they helped to spread nationalistic ideas throughout the country. These men were Giuseppe Mazzini, Count Camillo Benso di Cavour and Giuseppe Garibaldi. A number of rebellions, revolts and wars broke out during this time, which united the people of Italy under similar feelings of patriotism as they were all set on fighting for their country. He was born in Nice in 1807 and as a youth, was part of Mazzini's Young Italy movement. He fought in the revolutions of 1848 and played a critical role in the Risorgimento. He led a small army of red-shirted patriots into Sicily and received massive support from many Sicilians, which helped him to build up his confidence. He then led the Red Shirts into Naples in August 1860, and drove out Francis II, thus securing the independence of southern Italy. Garibaldi planned to continue his march north to capture Rome and Venetia but Cavour, afraid that Garibaldi might try to set up a republic, sent an army to stop his advance.
