Loyalist or Patriot?
Life in Hackensack, New Jersey is really getting crazy. The British have occupied New York, and my family and I are very nervous to have the enemy controlling an area so close to where we live. To capture these merchants' ships, privateers [go] out, usually in small ships, mostly sloops, to take them and their cargoes for resale. Privateers [are] privately owned ships that [act] like official navy vessels (Valis 1). This is a dangerous time for all of us, and a critical turning point in history. As Thomas Paine says, "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem to lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value (Paine 1)." Nothing now is taken for granted, not tea, clothing, and most importantly, freedom. We are fighting for independence and liberty. I am fighting for the money I need and the country I want my daughter to be able to live in when she grows up. I am very worried right now because Britain's tyranny is getting out of hand. However, I feel comfort in knowing that we have God on our side, and He will help us get through this successfully.
