Romanticism
Romanticism is a style of writing in the 18th century that shows the beauty and the naturalistic being of an person, place or object. Realism refers to the simplistic ideas and the physical being of the person, place or object. These two topics subjects are totally opposite to one another, but also share some similarities. Religion, superstition, freedom, individuality, romantics and realist have there own opinons on these topics. Taking it at a literature view, these topics will be used with The Crucible and Huckleberry Finn. Individuality is always being mentioned throughout the whole story of The Crucible. This story has both realist and romantic characters. Jon Proctor, an ideal romantic, is the one of the main characters of the story, along with Danforth, a realist. In act 4, these titles are clearly shown where Jon Proctor refuses to write his name on a document to show that he claimed to be with the devil, while Danforth only sees a name, Jon Proctor sees it more as a name, he sees it as it's part of his life, Jon only has one name, and dies with one name, and when Danforth claims this will be good for the town, Jon Proctor says that all he has is his name, if Danforth takes his name, Jon has nothing left to live f
Jim also talks about superstition which he goes in great depth with, especially on how his hairball can talk to him and tell the future. In one part of the story, Huck plays a trick on Jim by putting a dead snake in his bed, when Jim goes to the bed, he is bitten by the snake's mate. Huck kills the snake and Jim go tells him to cut off the snake's tail so that Jim doesn't get infected or die, with Huck being able to believe anything, he does what Jim says and his mentality thinks that Jim is not going to die. They say that in order to feel good you have to think that you feel good, in this case, Huck believes Jim feels good, so Jim does feel good, but only after drinking alcohol so he doesn't think about the swelling in the leg. This part shows that Jim glorified his superstitions that he got people to believe things that would be impossible such as a talking hairball into thinking the hairball is actually talking to Jim. At the end of the story, Huck becomes alittle more wise and also becomes a romantic when expressing his point of view when telling the story. Now freedom is referred to Huckleberry Finn. This was a very funny situation considering that Mark Twain, the author, was known as a realist, but in Huckleberry Finn, he shows his romantic abilities about the Mississippi River that Jim and Huck floated upon and also the details on the Grangerford's ho
