Flag Burning

A. The American Flag... It's a symbol worthy of or deepest respect because it stands for a nation and community that is strong, a community strong enough to tolerate diversity and the rights of those expressing unpopular views, even if they are expressing them in an offensive but non-violent manner.

B. A change to the first amendment of the constitution is an utterly ridiculous idea. Our country was founded upon the basic principles held within the bill of rights, principles that have held strong for over 200 years. The first amendment was set up to protect popular and unpopular viewpoints alike. If an individual protests the government by burning the American flag, it is that individual's right to do so.

A. Our opponent's claim that burning the American flag is a way of showing that your rights don't matter to you. This could not be any further from the truth. By burning the


B. Many schools, families and businesses across the country raise the flag in front of their establishment in order to show respect for our country. These people who are attempting to support America leave their flags out in the rain or snow without even considering the fact that they are damaging the U.S. emblem. At what point do we consider this defacing of our American symbol a criminal offense?

Flag burning is no act of vandalism. Expressing an unpopular viewpoint through flag burning is no crime; rather it is a form of symbolic speech that is protected under the first amendment. Next time you want to express an idea or viewpoint that doesn't align with the standards of our society, should we make it illegal for you to exercise your right to free speech?
