I put forth the best effort in all competition and always compete fairly." This is the National Youth Sports Program's Creed that they encourage every participant and staff members to live up to. On March 17, 1969, the White House announced that the Federal Government was committing three million dollars to establish a sports program for economically disadvantaged youth and that is how the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) was started. The representatives of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) got together with the Presidents Council on physical fitness and came up with the idea for NYSP. They then took their plan to the federal government and were given the grant to pilot the program that summer. They used the athletic facilities from two different universities to pilot NYSP. The objective of these programs is to provide and expand opportunities for disadvantaged youth to benefit from sports skills instruction, engage in sport competition and improve their physical fitness. NYSP also helps young people to acquire better health practices and provides a combination of employment and on-the-job training in sports instruction and administration. NYSP serves disadvantaged areas in the major metropolitan centers of the United States and other areas of need, within the limits of program resources. Through NYSP each participant receives a free medical examination prior to participation and any previously undetected physical problems that are identified receive adequate follow-up treatment. Each NYSP participant is covered by an accident-medical insurance policy, and liability insurance is provided for sponsoring institutions. A minimum of one USDA-approved meal is provided on a daily basis and the U.S. Department of Agriculture also provides fund for meals to the participating colleges and universities. Today,
