The Effects Of Alcoholism

When someone hears the word "drug" they don't usually think of alcohol, but instead they think of marijuana, cocaine, or heroin. The truth is that alcohol is a drug and can be just as harmful, if not more, then some illegal drugs. According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Alcoholism is defined as a chronic, progressive, incurable disease characterized by loss of control over alcohol and other sedatives. There are many factors that lead up to alcoholism and the effects are many and affect more then just the alcoholic.

Drinkers can be placed into one of two groups. There are those who are casual drinkers. They drink because they want to and do it with a friend of group of friends for enjoyment and only on occasion. The other kind of drinker drinks because they feel a need to do it. They drink more heavily and frequently then the occasional drinker and may drink alone just to

According to the National Council on Alcoholism, it is estimated that two out of five Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related accident at some time during their lives. Since alcohol impairs motor skills, reaction time, depth perception, and judgment a person under the influence of alcohol is unable to properly maneuver a vehicle. And because of the loss of judgment and inhibition the person is more likely to sit in the driver's seat even though it is not safe.

When an alcoholic is in the stage of self-denial and drinks alone and in secret more problems arise. For one, the alcoholic will feel necessary to escape and go somewhere alone or to a bar whenever problems arise.
