LSD and Crack-Cocaine
LSD and Crack-Cocaine Today, the problem of drugs has become one of the most serious ones facing the world and it's youth. Drugs in general, can be classified into 5 different kinds: cannabis or hemp (name of a plant) such as marijuana and hashish, opiates such as morphine, heroine and opium, stimulants such as cocaine and amphetamines, depressants also known as sedatives such as alcohol and barbiturates, and finally hallucinogens such as LSD, PCP and MDMA(ecstasy). When talking about drugs with the majority of people, especially grown-ups, we always hear: "Stay away from drugs," "Drugs are bad," or even " Say no to drugs." What these people don't know is the difference between each drug, the difference in tolerance-- which means the need to increase the dose to obtain the effects that were previously obtained with a lower dose-- between each drug and the difference between the withdrawal syndromes of each drug. For them drugs are drugs. My research will focus on two specific types of drugs: Crack, one of the most recently-discovered derivative of powder-cocaine and LSD, the most widely used and the best known hallucinogenic drug. The reasons why I choose theses two
The tolerance for crack-cocaine is different than that for other drugs. Crack smoking is characterized by a bingeing experience, in which the user takes the drug continuously over a period of days until either the supply is exhausted or the user is, writes Michael Gossop in his book Living with Drugs. The binge usually ends with a long disturbed sleep, added Gossop. The withdrawal syndromes are numerous. Most of the users say they have to use sedative drugs to calm down after the use of crack. They often complain of insomnia, anxiety, depression, some of them have fits or loss of consciousness. "Continuous consumption of high doses of the drug carries its own special dangers. The user may become irrational and start to develop feelings of persecution; in extreme cases, he may develop a toxic psychosis." Personally, I have never tried it and wouldn't want to, to me it's a scary drug. The reason why crack and LSD have a wide popularity especially among teenagers, is their cheap price and their easy availability. These two drugs, like many others, have succeeded in altering the state of consciousness which seems to be a means to get away from the day-to-day stresses of life. Whether taken alone or in company, for relaxation or stimulation, to satisfy some personal need or to comply with social pressures, we are surrounded by drugs, some more visible than others--the cups of coffee and tea, the glasses of bear, wine and whiskey, the tobacco cigarettes, the snorts of cocaine, the joints, the tablets of acid, the fixes of heroine and the tranquilizers and sleeping pills. Drug taking still remains one of the easiest and most immediate ways of altering psychological states. No form of drug taking is without its dangers, but drug taking is here to stay, and in one way or another we must learn to live with drugs.
