Glass Managerie
In Tennessee Williams Play The Glass Menagerie; the theme is some people have difficulty accepting reality of their own life. In the seven act play we are introduced to the Wingfield family, Tom, Amanda, and Laura. Each member of the Wingfield family has difficulty accepting reality. Amanda Wingfield is flat character in the play and is the mother of Tom and Laura. In the play Amanda is constantly referring back to Tom and Laura's father, about abandoning the family. She tells Tom repetitively that she doesn't want him to follow in his father's footsteps. I think she does this because she needs the reinforcement that Tom will not leave. Amanda was abandon by her husband and is fearful of being abandoned by Tom. Amanda also tells him that he needs him to support the family, because of his sister's disability. She tells him that if he were to leave, that she can't support her and Laura on selling magazines. She makes him start to think of what would happen if he left. To me she puts guilt on Tom to make him stay and support them, by using his sister Laura's disability. In the play Amanda and Laura are getting ready for the gentlemen caller to arrive with Tom. Amanda tries to dress Laura up as she use to dress when gentlemen caller
To me the breaking of the horn is symbolic for Jim breaking Laura out of her shell and making her feel normal. Laura's brother Tom also has a problem accepting reality. Laura Wingfield is a flat character in the play, she is the sister o f Tom and the daughter of Amanda. Laura has had a childhood illness that left her crippled. Laura has a glass collection, which to me is a symbolic. The glass collection symbolizes Laura herself, because like her glass collection she is to fragile to move from the shelf. Because of Laura's Crippled leg, her Self-Image is as fragile as her Glass collection, and that is why she is extremely withdrawn. Laura is extremely withdrawn to the point were she avoids contact with other. We see this when she walks the cold streets instead of going to school. Laura escapes reality is the play through her glass collection, and by listening to old records. When Laura is talking to Jim, She shows him her glass collection. She shows him her oldest figure a unicorn, which to me is a symbolic of Laura. The unicorn is symbolic of Laura because the Unicorn's horn is its defect and Laura's disability is hers. To Laura the unicorn and herself are different from others. When Laura puts the unicorn into Jim's hand it is like she is putting herself and her fragile image into his hands. Jim asks Laura to dance and puts the Unicorn on the table, and they begi
